When it comes to cancer, early detection can mean the difference between life and loss. For individuals aged 50 and older—especially those at increased risk—the ability to find cancer before symptoms appear can dramatically improve outcomes. Fortunately, TRICARE is now covering a test that brings proactive cancer screening within reach: the Galleri® multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test.
The Galleri test is a blood test that screens for over 50 different types of cancer—including many that don’t have routine screening methods today. Rather than waiting for symptoms to arise, the Galleri test works by detecting DNA shed by cancer cells into the bloodstream. It is meant to be used in addition to your regular screenings, not as a replacement.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S., and many dangerous cancers go undetected until they’ve reached an advanced stage.
Unfortunately, there are no recommended screenings for approximately 70% of cancers. That’s why the Galleri test can be such a game-changer—especially for people 50 and older, who are 13 times more likely to develop cancer than younger individuals.
As of December 2024, the Galleri test is included in TRICARE’s Lab Diagnostic Test Demonstration Program. This means it is covered for TRICARE beneficiaries who are age 50+ and at elevated risk for cancer. If you fall into this category, you may be eligible to receive the test annually.
